After completing the pilgrimage to Glastonbury, Tintagel and Avebury, I was inspired to re-visit the Druid Temple near Masham in Yorkshire. While it looks very old, it is thought to have been created in 1700s. Here is the info from the Swinton Estate website.
Not a great deal is known about the construction of the folly, but it is believed to have been built in the late 1700’s by William Danby (owner of Swinton Estate and nearby Swinton Park). It is rumoured that a hermit lived there for many years, but its mystical connections are probably fairly tenuous, as it was built at a time when there was a great deal of interest in Druidism as part of the emerging Romantic period.
After visiting the site, I headed to Masham, the home of two great breweries - Theakston's and Black Sheep for a pint of Dark smooth stout at the White Bear pub to watch the footy. England won against Denmark - well done, all!!! Now for Italy in the Finals
