Free Guy: A Hidden Message for Our Times

Back in 2021, I wrote a short blog about the powerful and wonderfully fun film Free Guy. At the time, the film had just been released, and I was careful not to reveal too much about the plot for fear of spoiling the experience. Now, a few years on, I feel it’s the perfect moment to revisit this remarkable movie — with full spoilers ahead.

At its core, Free Guy is about an NPC (non-player character) named Guy who wakes up inside a virtual reality world. Over the course of the story, we learn that the original architects (Keys and Millie) had created the virtual reality world (Life Itself) as place of harmony and beauty but it was not commercially successful. The AI engine was "taken" by Anton who converted it into a violent, chaotic playground where players could log in to steal cars, rob banks, and live out their wildest destructive fantasies — something very much in the spirit of Grand Theft Auto.

Guy’s awakening is triggered by a pair of special sunglasses (a clever nod to They Live, another must-watch film with a very similar "hidden reality" theme). With the glasses on, he sees the truth of his world — all the power-ups, weapons, and secret layers invisible to ordinary NPCs. Through courage, humour, and some brilliant scenes (including one where he manifests a shield in a clear homage to Captain America), Guy fights back. Eventually, the villain — the CEO bent on total control — starts physically destroying the server farm. But despite the chaos, the original hidden paradise world is revealed at the very end.

Having watched Free Guy several times now, I can’t help but feel how deeply the film mirrors our reality today. Just as in the movie, there is a hidden world — a true paradise — waiting just behind the scenes. It was always there, built with care and love, but buried under layers of corruption, manipulation, and distortion.

As we move through this pivotal time in human history, it’s becoming ever clearer that the "baddies" who hijacked our world are on their last legs. Many sources speak of an upcoming Solar Flash — a cosmic event that will cleanse and reveal all. I truly believe that when this happens, the hidden paradise will no longer be a myth or a dream. It will be unveiled in its full, breathtaking glory, just as it was for Free Guy.

In many ways, Free Guy is more than just an entertaining movie. It’s a powerful metaphor, a mirror, and a message of hope. We are all on the brink of remembering who we really are — and stepping into the beautiful reality that was always meant for us.
