Freewill is a key aspect of Consciousness. As explained in My Big TOE, we humans are Consciousness experiencing this virtual reality via our Avatar or human body. As consciousness, we have Freewill. Although for a lot of the time our behavior is determined by deep seated unconsciousness processes that we have learned, mainly in childhood.

 

 A robot that is following pre-programmed instructions written into its software. As it does not have freewill , one can say it is not conscious.

However, in season 1, the Reverie upgrades are introduced into Hosts. Somehow, not explained in the series, this causes the Hosts to be able to think for themselves, suggesting that they are acquiring consciousness.

In addition, the Maze theme when solved also allows the Hosts to gain consciousness. 

​

With freewill choices and memories, coupled with human emotional affects, the Hosts, effectively act as humans but with enhanced abilities. 

​

So a major theme in the Westworld series is about Robots becoming sentient and consciousness. What will they do?
